Steep in mining history, Ashland lies in the anthracite coal region of eastern Pennsylvania. Join us as we expore the horizontal drift mine at Pioneer Tunnel. Its level tunnel runs 1800 feet straight into the side of Mahanoy Mountain. Travel back through time on an old-time narrow gauge steam locomotive, the Henry Clay. You will visit the Mammoth Stripping, an area where an unusually thick stream of anthracite known as the Mammoth Vein outcrops to the surface of the earth. Then visit Historic Eckley's Miners Village to learn how Pennsylvanian miners once lived.
